National Red Ribbon Week

October 23rd - 31st, 2009

The Red Ribbon Campaign was started when drug traffickers in Mexico City brutally murdered Enrique "Kiki" Camarena, a DEA agent, in 1985. He was found buried in a shallow grave a month after his abduction on the city street in front of his office. He left behind a wife and 3 young children. As a tribute to his memory, friends and family began wearing ribbons of red satin. Then first lady Nancy Regan gave tribute to Agent Camarena by  proclaiming a national red ribbon week.  This began the continuing tradition of wearing and displaying red ribbons as a symbol of intolerance towards the use of illegal drugs, and to honor his bravery for giving his life to make a better life for all of us. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment toward the creation of a DRUG-FREE AMERICA. This event is celebrated annually during the last week of October.
